||For over 40 years Monterey Optimist Basketball has served as an integral part of basketball on the South Plains. Monterey Optimist Basketball (MOB) was established in 1971 under the initial sponsorship and oversight of the Monterey Optimist Club through the contribution of a $500 endowment MOB has since sprung from those humble beginnings to provide a basketball venue to approximately 1500 boys in grades 1 through 12 each year. Now under the direction of Caprock Ambucs it has recently expanded the playing arena to accomodate girls basketball.
Operational funds for the league itself are raised through a registration fee charged to each player. The fee covers a jersey, school gym rentals for games and practices, and game officials. MOB is operated through the tireless work an all-volunteer board. This Board of Directors is meticulous in making sure that funds from the league go towards providing scholarships for athletes who have participated in the program. Not only does MOB provide a competitive learning experience for school-aged boys and girls, but it also seeks to promote the sport in area public schools through the donation of equipment, scoreboards and goals.
